Juror’s Statement

Collage is a versatile medium that has an inherent capacity to transform and comment on our material world. The works selected for this exhibition employ collage in a variety of ways, but all express an inventive and dynamic approach to material handling, design, subject matter and content. Some works explore the formal language of abstraction, while others are overtly political. Many pieces are playful or whimsical (reminiscent of folk art and/or Surrealism) in their use/combination of familiar objects in surprising ways. Autobiography and narrative are themes that appear in of a number of works that present rich personal histories. Awards and honorable mentions were reserved for works that demonstrated an obsessive use of material, a haunting combination of draughtsmanship and restraint, powerful poetic juxtapositions, and in one case, a wonderfully wry sense of humor.
